Laundry Detergents:

Why would you want to wash your clothes with stuff you wouldn’t want to put on your skin directly? Your clothes are touching you and you smell them every single day. This means you are exposed to the chemicals you wash your clothes with everyday. Conventional laundry detergents are filled with endocrine disruptors, skin irritants and other chemicals such as dyes, linear aklylbenzene sulfonate, propylene glycol, monoethanolamine citrate and fragrance. These are only a few of the chemicals found in laundry detergents.

Fragrance is a big part of laundry detergents. We associated fragrance with cleanliness. We want our clothes to smell like the ocean or a meadow or whatever the fragrances are named after. But that is just the fragrance you smell!

Fragrance is such a sneaky little word in the ingredients section. The regulations are very loose and because their formulas are considered proprietary blends they don’t have to list what goes into them!

According to FDA’s website:

“If a cosmetic is marketed on a retail basis to consumers, such as in stores, on the Internet, or person-to-person, it must have a list of ingredients. In most cases, each ingredient must be listed individually. But under U.S. regulations, fragrance and flavor ingredients can be listed simply as “Fragrance” or “Flavor.””

With every product I buy, I go for ones that are fragrance-free unless they use essential oils for scent!

If I see anything with the word fragrance, I personally put it back right away!

Here are the products I use in my home:

Nature Clean Laundry Detergent – Fragrance Free: This is my absolute favourite that I use in my own home. It is biodegradable, cruelty-free and vegan. It is 99.9% natural and it is good enough for me personally!

Nature Clean – Stink Bombs: I use these if the clothes are really dirty and smelly and to freshen up my laundry machine. Also if you tend to forget your wet clothes in the laundry sometimes, these work wonders for that humidity smell! I put 1-2 in the laundry machine and run it and it becomes good as new!

Attitude Laundry Stain Remover: I find that this is a great stain remover but as with most stain removers you need to act fast. Once you let it stand for 2-3 days the stain solidifies.

I don’t use fabric softeners. I don’t think that they make a difference. I find that dryer makes the biggest difference in terms of softening the clothes.

Instead of drying sheets that are full of fragrances, I prefer using Wool Drying Balls. The brand I use is Moss Creek Wool Works. It is a Canadian brand and all the wool balls are handmade in Canada.

Household cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated. The simpler and effective the better!
